Overview

Molecular pathology refers to the study of the molecular aspects of disease and involves the analysis of DNA or RNA sequences. Human molecular genetics and laboratory microbiology has been revolutionised by the ability to analyse DNA and RNA sequences from humans and micro-organisms.

The Molecular Pathology department is housed in a purpose built building next to the main central laboratory at Gippsland Pathology, Traralgon,Victoria. The department was designed to NPACC guidelines and contains separate contained areas for nucleic acid extraction, master mix preparation and amplification/PCR. Each room has separate air flow to meet the strict NPACC requirements for a microbiology nucleic acid amplification and nested PCR. The department has also invested heavily in ‘state-of-the-art’ equipment such as ‘real-time’ PCR instruments and a DNA sequencer.
