Dr. Alan McNeil graduated from the University of NSW and completed his postgraduate training in Pathology and Endocrinology in Adelaide and Newcastle. He completed a PhD in Medicine at Royal Melbourne Hospital studying intracellular signalling, and was Senior Lecturer in Chemical Pathology at Auckland University from 1995 to 2000. Alan joined Dorevitch Pathology in 2001 and is Head of Chemical Pathology.

Alan received the Wellcome Prize in the membership examinations of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (AACB) and was granted an NH&MRC Postgraduate Scholarship for his PhD studies. He is currently the AACB's Education Vice President and is an examiner for the College of Pathologists.

He is interested in quality improvement and error reduction in laboratories and in all aspects of biochemical test interpretation.
